Waiting a whole year to enjoy our most exciting programming competition felt like too much, so this year we’ve decided to bring you the Karel Challenge Online earlier! The competition kicks off on January 27th and runs until February 22nd, the day of the finals. This online edition will also serve as a warm-up for the in-person competition, which will take place in May following its usual yearly schedule.

As a new feature this year, the Karel Challenge Online will be divided into two categories: Super, which is a higher difficulty league with specific qualification requirements, designed for participants who already have experience and strategies in place, and Gold, which is open to all other participants who don’t qualify for the Super category.

Both categories will run simultaneously and each participant can compete in only one category. To qualify for the Super category, participants must complete the “Excursions” level in under four minutes.

The Karel Challenge is an eSport that tests speed, strategy, and accuracy in programming. The goal of the competition is to promote coding among young people in a fun and exciting way. Players control a small virtual robot called Karel, guiding it through various scenarios to overcome obstacles, collect objects, complete the map objective, and reach the exit before their rivals’ robots.
